SPRINGFIELD, MA- The
Williams College baseball team (12-5) found themselves on the
losing end of a hard fought pitcher's dual against Springfield
(6-11) on Wednesday afternoon. The Ephs were
held to just two hits on the day and were shutout for only the
second time this season, 3-0.
"It was a cold, windy day and we had trouble
putting together some offense," said head coach Bill
Barrale. "It's hard to win when you only manage
two hits."
The story of the game was the pitching of
Pride sophomore Michael Cole who had a no hitter going into the
seventh. In that inning, senior Max Pinto and
junior Taylor Mikell hit back to back singles to break up the no
hitter, but were denied any runs when Pinto was thrown out at the
plate on an impressive diving play by the shortstop.
The bottom of the seventh would prove to be
the downfall for the Ephs as two errors led to the game going from
a scoreless tie to a 3-0 Springfield advantage.
The Ephs managed to load the bases in the top of the eighth but
could not get put any runs on the board.
For the Ephs, sophomore Paul Burgdorf started
the game and went six scoreless innings before allowing 2 earned
runs in the seventh. Fellow sophomore Thomas
Coleman pitched the final two frames and did not allow a
run.
The Ephs are now faced with a short turnaround
as they prepare for the first home game of the season tomorrow
against Elms. The game is scheduled to begin at
4:15 PM.
