WILLIAMSTOWN, MA-  The Williams College baseball team (21-9, 8-2) find themselves one step closer to officially beginning their conference title defense with a doubleheader sweep of NESCAC rival Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.  The wins, 9-1 and 19-4, extended the Eph winning streak to a season high eight games.

"Today we put together some complete games in which we hit and pitched very well," said head coach Bill Barrale.  "We came out relaxed and put together good at bats against some good pitchers."

In game one, the Ephs compiled nine runs but it turned out that junior starter Dan Benz only needed a couple, as the lefty pitched all seven innings, allowing no earned runs (1 unearned) while striking out seven.

On the offensive side, sophomore right fielder Al Matthews continued to excel in his first full season as an Eph starter, going 2-2 with a run and three RBIs.  Junior designated hitter Taylor Mikell also had a strong day at the plate, going 2-4 with two runs.

"Dan Benz pitched a great game and limited a strong offensive team," said Barrale.

In the second game, the offense was the story, as the Ephs put up an impressive 19 runs on 21 hits.  Senior second baseman James DiCismo had another multi-hit game (his fifteenth of the year), going 3-6 with three runs and four RBIs, while fellow senior, left fielder Kevin Flynn, was also a big contributor going 4-5 with two runs and two RBIs.

Building on their game one success, Mikell went 3-6 with a run and four RBIs, while Matthews batted 3-5 with three runs and four RBIs, including two of his three triples on the day.

On the mound for the Ephs was senior Matt Gustafson who went seven innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) while striking out six.

"Matt Gustafson also pitched well on the day," said Barrale.  "It turned out to be just a good day all around."

The Ephs conclude their series tomorrow at Wesleyan with a nine inning game beginning at 1 PM.
