WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- The Ephs 11-game win streak came to a
screeching halt today as they were outdueled by the Lord Jeffs of
Amherst in an afternoon doubleheader, losing 12-1 in the first game
and 4-1 in the second. Williams is now 11-7 overall and 3-2
in conference matches, while Amherst improves to 11-9 and 4-3 in
the NESCAC West.
"We didn't make the routine plays today and we didn't have a
good approach to the plate," said Eph head coach Bill
Barrale. "They [Amherst] outpitched us, they outhit us, and
they flat outplayed us this afternoon."
The first game was to seven innings, and the Lord Jeffs got a
full seven from sophomore hurler Ryan Healy, who allowed just 1
run, 1 walk and struck out 7 in an impressive 2-hit
performance. Eph starter Dan Benz had a more difficult day,
as he suffered 8 runs on 7 hits in 4 and 1/3 innings of work.
He was knocked out in the top of the fifth, an inning in which
Amherst amassed 10 runs on 7 hits and 2 errors. It would
prove to be more than enough offense for Healy and the Lord Jeffs
as they coasted to the 12-1 victory.
Game two was a nine-inning affair, and Amherst's pitching was
strong again. This time it was sophomore starter Max McKenna
asnd senior reliever Ryan Platzbecker who dominated the hill.
Combined, they let up just 1 run on 3 hits while walking 2 and
striking out 6. Williams junior starter Paul Burgdorf went 5
innings and allowed 4 runs on 9 hits in his outing. Freshman
Harry Marino was outstanding in relief, giving up just 1 hit and 1
walk over 4 innings.
The Ephs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after
freshman outfielder Stephen Maier walked and senior Taylor Mikell
singled him to third. Maier took home on a pass ball to give
Williams their only lead of the day. But it was short-lived,
as Amherst tied the score in the top half of the next inning, and
then added two more in the top half of the third. The scoring
in that inning was punctuated by a deep drive off the right-center
field wall by senior Brendan Powers that scored sophomore Scott
Shafer to give the Lord Jeffs a 3-1 lead. They would add one
more in the top of the fifth on their way to a 4-1 win.
"Harry did a great job for us today," commented Barrale, "but it
was too late. We gave them too many outs over the course of
the day and you can't win like that.... We're gonna have to
take much better approaches to our at-bats and do a better job of
making the routine play if we want to get back on to a winning
track."
Williams will rest Sunday before resuming their campaign Monday
afternoon at home against MCLA. The first pitch will be
thrown at 4PM on the Bobby Coombs field.
