WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - The Williams College
baseball team (14-7) won their third game in four days with an 11-2
victory over Castleton State Thursday afternoon. The victory
snapped a seven game winning streak for Castleton State, as the
Ephs pounded out at least 16 hits for the second consecutive game.
"Castleton's a good team who've been hot lately, so to come out
and win the way we did was nice," said head coach Bill Barrale.
"Our approach to the plate was purposeful and aggressive...we
had several guys with multi-hit games and it's because of the way
they took their at-bats."
Coming off a convincing 15-4 win over Elms, the Ephs continued
their strong offensive streak. After being denied runs in the
first inning, when first year Cameron Susk lined into a hard luck
double play, the Ephs responded with two runs in both the second
and third innings to take an early 4-0 lead.
That proved to be enough for Eph first year starter Eddie Nadel
who kept the Spartans scoreless through the first four innings,
before allowing his only earned run of the day in the fifth.
Nadel finished with five innings of one hit ball to go along with
four strikeouts.
In the sixth, the Spartans added another run off Eph sophomore
reliever Tommy Hester to pull within two at 4-2. That seemed
to serve as a spark for the offense, as the Ephs pounded out seven
runs in their final three innings, including a five run eighth, to
put the game out of reach.
The bullpen combination of senior Zach Stone, sophomore Dan
Marcet, and first year Evan Oleson held the Spartans scoreless in
the final three frames to clinch the victory.
"The key to our success today was that we pitched well and we
played a clean game in the field," said Barrale. "We hit very
well today, but we made good pitches and we didn't make any errors
and that's what made the difference."
The high-powered offensive attack was led by juniors Chad Brown
and Al Mathews. Brown went 2-4 with two runs, three RBI, and
a triple, while Mathews collected three hits, two runs, and an RBI.
Susk continued his strong rookie campaign by going 3-5 out of
the cleanup spot with two runs and two RBI. Fellow first year
Stephen Maier led off and collected two hits and a run.
Rounding out the numbers for the Ephs were senior Taylor Mikell
(1-5, one run), junior Robin Allemand (2-4, one run), and sophomore
James Allison (2-4, one run).
Next up for the Ephs is a crucial three game NESCAC series
against Hamilton. The action begins tomorrow afternoon at
Steuben Field (4 PM) and concludes with a double header on Saturday
(12:00, 2:30 PM).
"We've got a big weekend coming up," acknowledged Barrale.
"We have three big conference matchups, so we're excited to
play, and try and continue what we did today."
