BABSON PARK, MA- The Williams College baseball team (10-5,
3-0) extended their winning streak to ten with a 9-8 win over
Babson College Sunday afternoon. The Ephs, who were playing
in the first game since returning from Arizona, got six strong
innings from senior captain Ben Horowitz and an impressive 1 2/3
inning save from fellow senior Zach Stone in the win.
"We played good defense today and had two excellent performances
on the mound, and when you can have both those things, you have a
great chance to win," said head coach Bill Barrale. "It was
nice to get a win while making the transition from Arizona to New
England today, and to do it on the road against a good team makes
it even better."
The Ephs looked poised to continue their strong offensive
production as they scored three runs in both of the first two
innings. Junior Robin Allemand gave the Ephs a 6-2 lead in
the second inning with a two run homer to center, and finished 2-5
with a run on the day.
After the Ephs scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take
an 8-3 lead, the Beavers started to mount a comeback. Babson
scored three runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth, and
found themselves only down one at 9-8.
It was at this point that the Ephs turned to their strong senior
class, as Stone came in with one out in the eighth and struck out
two Beaver batters to end the threat. In the ninth, Stone
allowed a one-out single but forced a double play groundball to end
the contest and give the Ephs a victory in their New England
debut.
Stepping up for the Ephs on Sunday, were Horowitz, who allowed
only four hits while striking out two in the win, and Stone who
went 2-4 with an RBI at the plate. Junior Al Matthews was
also impressive, as he went 1-3 with 3 RBI.
Next up for the Ephs is a 4 PM game at Fordham April
7th and an important NESCAC series against archrival
Amherst in the home opener April 11th.
