Ephs salvage spilt with Carleton

MESA, CA -- First year Jimmy Ray tossed five innings of one-run baseball Wednesday, helping Williams College win the nightcap of a doubleheader with Carleton College, 6-2, and salvage a split.

Ray was backed the trio of Stephen Maier, Al Mathews and Pat Barren, who combined for six of the Eph eight hits on the day, all five of the RBI and two of the six runs scored.

Williams moved to 2-3 on the season after dropping the opener of the twinbill by an 8-4 score. Thursday, the Ephs will make up a rained out doubleheader with Thomas beginning at 12 noon, MST.

Ray was especially impressive in the early frames, and his teammates gave him an early lead with a run in the third when Jim Entwisle singled and came home on Maier's RBI-triple. Williams increased that lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Mathews singled, Robin Allemand walked, Chad Brown laid down a perfect sac bunt, and Barren followed with a two-run single.

Ray made that lead stand up, going five innings and allowing four hits and one walk while striking out three. The one run he allowed was unearned. Cameron Susk came on a threw a scoreless inning before Ben Oliva finished up, allowing one run on two hits in the seventh.

The Ephs lost game one despite outhitting Carleton, 13-7. After allowing a run in the top of the first, Williams came back with two in its half for a 2-1 lead. With one out James Allison dropped down a nice bunt single. After Mathrews forced him out at second, Allemand singled. Brown and Barren followed with RBI-singles.

Carleton exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead and never looked back. First year Patrick Blizzard got the start and took the loss, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing four hits and five walks while fanning six.

Mathews, Allemand and Barren were each 3 for 4 for the Ephs. Barren had two RBI. Senior Tom Coleman threw two scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits while walking one and striking out two.
