Cardiac Ephs stage late rally to upend divisional foe Middlebury, 7-6

CHANDLER, AZ. -- Williams College scored five runs in the final three innings Friday to rally past Middlebury, 7-6, in its divisional opener at Snedigar Park.

The Ephs improved to 4-4 with the win, 1-0 in the NESCAC West. Williams and Middlebury play a doubleheader Saturday back at Snedigar Park. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. MST.

Williams trailed 5-2 entering the top of the seventh Friday. Sophomore Cameron Susk ignited the rally with a lead-off triple, scoring on a groundout by first year KC Murphy to make it 5-3. The Panthers added a run in their half of the seventh to regain a three-run lead.

In the Williams eighth, James Allison led off with a single, and Al Mathews drew a walk. After Pat Barren had sacrificed the runners to second and third, Chad Brown scored Allison with a sacrifice fly. Robin Allemand kept the inning going with a two-out single that scored Mathews. Susk then followed with a single that sent Allemand to third. On the play, Susk got caught in a rundown between first and second, and Allemand scampered home with the tying run when a throwing error occurred.

The score remained 6-6 with two outs in the top of the ninth. The red-hot Allison then singled. Mathews followed with a single, and Barren lined a clutch RBI-single that scored Allison with the go-ahead run.

Allison finished 2 for 3 with a walk, a sacrifice bunt and two runs scored. Susk was 2 for 4 for the Ephs, who had nine hits on the day.

Sophomore Dan Grossman picked up the win for Williams, throwing 3 2/3 innings of one run relief. He allowed three hits, while walking one and striking out four. Harry Marino had the start and lasted 5 1/3 frames, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out one. Of the five runs charged to Marino, only two were earned.
