CHANDLER, AZ. -- The Williams College baseball
team used a 17-hit attack to battle its way back from an early
five-run deficit and defeat Oberlin College, 16-11, Thursday.
The comeback allowed the Ephs to conclude their trip out West
with a 9-7 record. Williams opens the northeast part of its
schedule April 6 with a road game at Dartmouth College.
James Allison and Cameron Susk spearheaded the Ephs' offensive
attack by going 3 for 5 at the plate. Allison drove in five runs
and had a home run for the second day in a row, while Susk knocked
out two doubles and drove in four runs in the victory.
Williams was down 5-0 after the top of the first, 7-4 after the
top of the second, 9-8 after the top of the fourth and 11-9 after
the top of the sixth but would not quit. In the fifth, senior Chad
Brown led off the frame with a solo home run to knot things at
nine-all.
In the sixth, Al Mathews and Pat Barren drew walks and moved up
a base on a wild pitch. Robin Allemand scored one run with a
sacrifice fly and Susk's RBI-single made it 11-11.
The Ephs finally got over the mountaintop in the seventh. KC
Murphy led off with a double. Jim Entwisle put Williams on top for
the first time all day with an RBI-single. Stephen Maier drew a
walk and Allison followed with a three-run blast over the right
field fence for a 15-11 lead. After Allemand reached on an error,
Susk drove him home with an RBI-double.
Tom Coleman got the start for Williams, lasting three innings
and giving up 10 hits and eight runs, six earned, while walking no
one and striking out two. Sophomore Eddie Nadel picked up the win,
tossing the final six innings and allowing five hits and three
runs, two earned, while walking one and striking out four.
Maier finished 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored for the
Ephs, while Mathews was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, Entwisle 2
for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Murphy 2 for 5.
