Box Score Game 2

AMHERST, MA – The Williams College baseball team had a huge day coming away with a pair of wins on a beautiful spring day against archrival Amherst.  The visiting Ephs took game one of the doubleheader 5-2 behind a strong pitching performance by senior Paul Burgdorf.  The Ephs completed the sweep by out-slugging the Lord Jeffs to win 12-9.  The Ephs improved to 10-8-1 overall and 3-1 in NESCAC play.  Amherst, meanwhile, falls to 11-8 overall and 4-3 in the NESCAC.

The Ephs used a strong third inning to mount a 4-0 lead in game 1 and held on with solid pitching the rest of the way.  Burgdorf led the way, winning his first game of the year, going six innings and allowing only two runs on three hits, while striking out eight.  Sophomore Danny Grossman picked up his first save, pitching one inning of scoreless baseball and allowing one hit.

After a slow start, the Ephs got their offense going in the third.  Senior Jim Entwisle led off and advanced to second on a throwing error.  Steve Maier '12 scored Entwisle on a triple to center.  James Allison '11 then blasted a double down the right field line to give the Ephs a 2-0 lead.  After a groundout and a Pat Barren '11 walk, Robin Allemand '10 singled up the middle to extend the Eph lead.  After another fielding error loaded up the bases, Cameron Susk '12 hit a sacrifice fly to score Barren.

The Ephs added an insurance run in the fourth when Allison tripled to right and scored on an Al Matthews double.  Allison led the Ephs offense with a pair of hits, two runs, and an RBI.

Williams used a strong offensive attack to take game 2.  Sophomore Harry Marino got the start and lasted three and two-thirds innings, giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits, while striking out three and walking three.  Grossman got the win, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) in three and a third innings.  Freshman Jimmy Ray was strong in relief, earning his first save by pitching two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Williams got things going in the second inning.  A hit batter and a walk put the first two Eph batters on base, and Susk drove in the first Eph run with a single up the middle.  KC Murphy reached on an infield single to load the bases.  A fielder's choice, an error, and a wild pitch allowed three more runs to score to give the Ephs a 4-0 lead after two innings.

The Ephs scored two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to pull away and earn the victory.  The Ephs had six batters with at least 2 hits.  Susk led the way with three hits, 2 runs, and an RBI.  Maier, Allison, Matthews, Murphy, and Chad Brown '11 had a pair of hits.

Head Coach Bill Barrale was pleased with his team's performance: “Obviously any time you can sweep a doubleheader its great.  Paul Bergdorf pitched great in the first game and we turned two big double plays to preserve the lead.”  Barrale added that, “Stephen Maier had a great day with a double, triple, and a great catch to end the first game.”

He was also impressed with his freshman ace, Jimmy Ray.  “Ray did a great job coming in for the last two innings to close out the second game.”

The Ephs return home tomorrow for their NESCAC home opener against Amherst.
