WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Amherst College Lord Jeffs avoided
a series sweep Sunday at Cole Field by outslugging the Ephs
10-4. Junior Ryan Healy held the Williams offense at bay
until the sixth inning, going five and two-thirds inning allowing
two runs on five hits and striking out three. The Ephs, who
won the weekend series by sweeping the doubleheader yesterday, fall
to 11-9-1 (4-2), while Amherst improves to 12-9 (5-4).
The first five innings were largely a pitcher's
duel. Sophomore Eddie Nadel performed well for the Ephs,
giving up four earned runs on eight hits in five and a third
innings. The Ephs had a great chance early when they loaded
the bases with one out in the second, but an Andrew Bishop
'13 flyout and Jim Entwisle '10 groundout kept the game
scoreless. Amherst opened the scoring in the third when Bob
Cook doubled to center and scored on a Nolan Stewart single.
Amherst added another run in the fourth when Will Lawton hit a
sacrifice fly to left.
Both teams rallied in the sixth as the starting pitchers began
to tire. Thomas Wheeler got on with a leadoff single and was
advanced by a sacrifice bunt and a balk by Nadel. Wheeler
scored on a single by Lawton. Lucas Casso '13 came into
the game for the Ephs but struggled against the heart of the Lord
Jeff order. Cook scored two on a deep triple to right
center.
Williams got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Pat
Barren '11 walked and came home on a monster triple by Robin
Allemand '10. Allemand then scored when Chad Brown
'11 hit a soft groundball to short.
Amherst prevented Williams from gathering too much momentum,
however, answering with a pair of runs in the top of the
seventh. After a single and an error, Lawton hit a 2 RBI
triple to increase the Amherst lead to 7-2.
Williams got another run in the bottom of the seventh when Al
Matthews singled and scored on a Pat Barren double, but would get
no closer. Amherst put the game out of reach in the eighth,
scoring three runs on three hits, including a 2 RBI double by
Wheeler.
Cameron Susk '12 and Andrew Bishop '13 led the Ephs
offensively, each going 2 for 3 with a walk. Matt Berdoff
'12 threw well in relief for the Ephs retiring all three
batters he faced in the ninth.
Head Coach Bill Barrale was disappointed with the loss, but saw
some positives coming out of the weekend: "Obviously it would have
been nice to win today, but we won two out of three on the weekend
and control our own destiny." Barrale was pleased with
Nadel's performance: "Eddie did a nice job. They're a good
team and he pitched well. We gave them too many outs. They
made some plays on defense and that was a big difference."
Williams returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to North
Adams to take on cross-county rival MCLA before returning home for
a weekend series with Hamilton.
