NORTH ADAMS, MA – Al Matthews '10 and James Allison
'11 combined for eight hits and eight RBI to lead the Ephs to
a 15-7 victory of county rival MCLA. The Ephs who struggled
to hit the ball in a loss Sunday to Amherst, posted 22 hits in the
game. With the win the Ephs improve to 12-9-1 on the season
heading into a weekend series with Hamilton. MCLA, meanwhile,
falls to 6-11.
Starter Wilson Barr '11 struggled somewhat giving up seven
runs, five earned, on five hits in two innings of work. Barr
also walked three and struck out two. The highlight of the
day for the Ephs was undoubtedly the relief pitching.
Sophomore Matt Berdoff picked up his second win of the season,
pitching four innings of two-hit baseball. Tom Coleman
'10 was equally dominant, allowing one hit over two
innings. Ben Oliva '12 closed out the game, retiring
all three batters he faced.
Head Coach Bill Barrale was thrilled with the performance of his
pitchers: "Going back to when we started, I thought the pitching
would be one of our strong points and it really hasn't been
up to this point, but it was nice to see us pitch well today.
I thought Matt Berdoff pitched great and Coleman looked as
good as he's ever looked."
Williams wasted little time putting runs on the board. Stephen
Maier and James Allison singles followed by an Al Mathews walk
loaded the bases in the top of the first. Pat Barren
'11 singled to bring home Maier. Robin Allemand
'10 then hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Allison, but
Matthews was thrown out trying to take third. Chad Brown
'11, a Pittsfield native playing against many high school
foes, doubled to score Barren and give the Ephs a 3-0 lead after
one.
After a one-two-three bottom of the first, Williams continued to
hit the ball, adding to their lead in the second. Taylor Mondshein
'13 singled and stole second to start things off for the
Ephs. Maier then singled, followed by an Allison single,
which scored Mondshein. Matthews then belted a double that
brought home two.
MCLA mounted a comeback in the second inning scoring seven runs
on five hits. A double and an error put two men on with one
out. Back to back singles scored three runs. The next
batter walked before another pair of singles scored three more
runs. MCLA tacked on another run on a sacrifice fly before Williams
finally escaped the inning on a lineout to Allemand.
Williams regained the lead in the third, scoring another three
runs. Allison plated Andrew Bishop '13 and Maier with a
one-out single, and Matthews sent Allison home on a single after
Allison stole second.
Williams dominated the rest of the way as the three relief
pitchers combined to allow only three hits over seven
innings. The Eph offense continued to produce, scoring two
runs in the fourth, sixth, and eight innings.
Josh Gould took the loss for MCLA, giving up nine runs, all
earned, on twelve hits and two walks.
Allison led the offense with five hits and four RBI, but was
joined by Maier, Mathews, and Bishop who had three hits each.
Barren, Allemand, and Cameron Susk '12 had a pair of hits as
well. Catcher Evan Frank led the way for the Trailblazers,
recording three hits and two RBI. Barrale noted the
importance that the top of the lineup played: "Last week was a
tough week where we played some really good teams. It was
great to see those guys (Maier, Allison, and Matthews) come back
today. They really set the tone. We hit the ball a ton
and did a great job hitting as a team."
The Ephs return to action Friday when they battle Hamilton
College at 3:30 in Williamstown.
