WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- The Williams College baseball team used
timely hitting and solid pitching to defeat the Hamilton
Continentals 6-5 and 11-7 this afternoon. Both Eph starting
pitchers threw great games. Harry Marino '12 picked up the
win in game one, allowing four earned runs on three hits and five
walks while striking out six in five and a third innings of work.
Eddie Nadel '12 was equally dominant, allowing one earned run
on seven hits and three walks to go with five strikeouts in five
and a third innings. The Eph bats continued to produce,
including a seven run outburst in the first two innings of game 2.
After surrendering a run on a pair of hits and a walk in the
first inning, the Eph offense picked up right where it left off on
Saturday, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first three
innings. Stephen Maier '12 led off with the first of his
three doubles in the game. After a fly-out, Al Mathews '10
and Pat Barren '11 drew walks to load the bases with only one out.
Local star Chad Brown '11 then hit a clutch two-out single to
score two and give the Ephs the lead.
The Ephs scored two in the second as well, as Maier's second
double of the game sparked a two-out rally. James Allison '11
followed Maier with a single to put runners on the corners.
Mathews singled to score Maier, and Barren singled to bring
Allison home. Allemand hit the Ephs fifth consecutive hit,
but Mathews thrown out at home trying to score to end the inning.
After posting another two runs in the third, the Ephs turned to
strong defense and pitching to preserve the lead. Marino
engineered a trio of short innings in the third, fourth, and fifth
innings, before exiting the game in the sixth. Hamilton
fought back into the game in the sixth, scoring four runs to climb
within one. Marino issued three walks to load the bases
before being replaced to reliever Tom Coleman '10. Coleman
gave up a 2-run single to shortstop Dan Peters and then a 2-run
double to pinch hitter Grady Vigneau. Matt Berdoff then
entered the game with the tying run on second and go-ahead run on
first. He was able to get two big outs to keep the Ephs on
top.
Hamilton threatened again in the top of the seventh inning when
Alex Augustyn hit a leadoff double off Berdoff. With the
tying run in scoring position, Head Coach Bill Baralle turned to
freshman Jimmy Ray to close out the victory: "Jimmy pitched great,
for a freshman he's really confident out there. He's got a
lot of poise and nothing seems to phase him." Ray got a pair
of fly-outs before finishing the game with a strikeout for the win.
Maier led the offense with three doubles, 2 RBI, and 2 runs
scored. Augustyn led the Continentals with a pair of hits and
2 runs scored.
Game 2 followed a similar story-line as the first game with the
Ephs taking a big lead early and then protecting the lead for the
victory. The Ephs roughed up starter Rob Barbieri, scoring
seven runs on eight hits and a walk in the first one and third
innings. Allison got things going for the Ephs with a one-out
double to the wall. Mathews the got on with a walk before
Barren put the Ephs on the board with an RBI single. Taylor
Mondshein '13 scored Mathews on an RBI single up the middle and
then came around to score on a monster 2-run double by Cameron Susk
'12.
Williams wasted little time adding to their lead in the second.
Maier hit a one-out triple and scored on Allison's second hit
of the game. Mathews then belted the first of his two triples
in the game to score Allison and came home on a single by Barren.
Nadel worked out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the fifth by
striking out one man and inducing a fly ball to end the inning.
The Ephs seemed to be in cruise control until the seventh inning
when Hamilton's offense began to produce against reliever Lucas
Casso '13. A single and a pair of hit batters loaded the
bases with one out. Michael Matt singled to right field to
score one, followed by a Joe Buicko sacrifice fly that brought
another man home. Augustyn then singled to center to score
another run, before Wes Mayberry brought Hamilton within two
on a big two-run double to center. Casso wasable to escape
the inning with the tying run at the plate with a clutch strikeout.
Williams added two insurance runs in the eighth when Mathews hit
his second triple with two outs to score Ben Oliva '12 and Allison.
Freshman Pat Blizzard pitched two scoreless innings, allowing a
hit and a walk while striking out two to secure the win.
"The weather wasn't great and it was great to get two wins,"
Barrale noted afterwards. "I think we showed today that if we
can play consistently we're going to be fine. We hit pretty
well and had good pitching. We got into trouble with walks
and hit batters a few times, but it was definitely nice to come
away with the wins."
The Ephs improved to 15-9-1 (7-2) on the season, while Hamilton
fell to 6-20 (0-9). The Ephs return to action on Tuesday when
the travel to Union College and return home on Saturday for a
doubleheader against Wesleyan.
