Ephs Win Fifth Straight in 15-7 Win Over Union

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Williams College baseball team won their fifth game in eight days, defeating Union College 15-7 today.  James Allison '11 led the way for the Ephs, going 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored.  Dan Marcet '11 picked up the win for the Ephs coming on in the fourth to replace starter Wilson Barr '11.

Williams started hot, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings.  Allison got things going in the first with a one-out single.  He then stole second and advanced to third on a single by Al Mathews '10.  A wild pitch then scored Allison.  Mathews then scored on an error.  After a fly-out and a Robin Allemand '10 walk, Cameron Susk '12 continued to swing a hot bat, crushing an RBI double to left field.

Jim Entwisle '10 hit his first of three hits to lead off the second and advanced to second on a single by Taylor Mondshein '13.  After a strikeout, Allison hammered a two-run triple before scoring on a passed ball.

Barr pitched well through two innings, allowing one run on two hits, but ran into trouble in the third.  Kevin Dexter hit a two run homerun, and a pair of errors allowed another run to cross in the inning.  Barr lasted three innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits while walking four and striking out one.

Marcet earned the win, pitching three innings of one-hit ball.  He gave up a home run to A Cassese in the sixth.

Williams extended their lead in the fourth, scoring three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and two in the eighth.  Mathews, Allison, Susk, and Entwisle all had three hits in the game, while Allemand, and center fielder Ben Oliva '12 each had two.

Head Coach Bill Barrale switched the lineup around a bit for the mid-week game and was pleased with the results:  “We played some different guys today and we hit the ball really well.  I thought Ben Oliva played great in center.  James Allison caught for the first time and gave Chad Brown a rest.  Jim Entwisle had a bunch of hits.”

The Ephs improved to 16-9-1 on the year, picking up their fifth straight win.

Barrale claims he knew the Ephs weren't far away from playing this well earlier in the year: “I kept saying up until this little win streak that we were really close to breaking through.  We've always been a good hitting team, and now we're starting to put together some good pitching with good defense.  We only committed one error and when you combine all those things, you're going to be able to string some wins together.”

The Ephs return to action tomorrow when they travel to Southern Vermont before returning home for a doubleheader with Wesleyan on Saturday.
