Box Score
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- The Williams College baseball team scored
seven runs in the first three innings and used strong pitching to
defeat Union 8-5 for their tenth straight victory. Eddie
Nadel '12 and Tom Coleman '10 combined to shut down the Dutchmen
and preserve the win.
After a pair of infield singles and a two-out double by Aaron
Cassese gave the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead in the first, the Ephs came
roaring back for four runs in the first. Stephen Maier '12
led off with a standup triple to deep center field. After a
James Allison '11 ground out, Al Mathews '10 reached on an error
that scored Maier. Robin Allemand then tripled to right field
to bring Mathews home. Chad Brown '10 then walked, stole
second, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Allemand
scored on the passed ball to make it 3-0. After a Cameron
Susk '12 walk, Pat Blizzard '13 hit a sacrifice fly to center field
to bring Brown home.
Williams continued to put runs on the board in the second.
With two outs and no one on, Mathews singled up the middle
and came home when Allemand hit his second triple of the game.
After Brown's second walk of the game, Susk singled to score
Allemand and give the Ephs a 6-2 lead.
Nadel lasted four innings, allowing three earned runs on six
hits, striking out one and walking one. Nadel was pleased with his
start: "I felt good out there. I wanted to get some quality
innings in before the game against Wesleyan. The offense
really helped me out with four runs in the first, which allowed me
to just throw strikes."
Coleman came on in the fifth. After struggling a bit in
his first inning of work, hitting a pair of batters, and allowing a
pair of runs, Coleman pitched a four inning gem. Coleman
pitched perfect sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, allowing one
hit in the ninth before inducing a game-ending double play.
Coleman was undoubtedly the story of the game, mixing a hard
fastball with great off-speed pitches. Head Coach Bill
Barrale was pleased with Coleman's performance: "Tommy had bit of a
rough start but really pitched well. It was good to see him
really settle in on the mound."
Offensively, the Ephs were led by Allemand who had two triples
and two RBI. Freshman first baseman Andrew Bishop also had a
pair of hits and a run scored.
The Ephs have now run ten in a row and twelve of their last
thirteen. They return to action when they travel to Troy, NY
to take on RPI tomorrow.
