WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- The Williams College baseball team continued
their winning ways, scoring nine runs in the sixth en route to a
17-6 victory over RPI. Third baseman Taylor Mondshein '13 and
left fielder Al Mathews '10 led the way with four hits each and
five and three RBI respectively. Sophomore Matt Berdoff also
starred, coming on in relief to pick up the victory, allowing one
run on two hits in three innings of work.
Williams continued a recent trend, scoring four runs in the
first two innings. Center fielder Stephen Maier '12 led
off with a single to right field and advanced to second on an
error. James Allison '11 put runners on the corners with a
single to right. Mathews picked up his first hit of the game,
singling to score Maier. Mathews and Allison advanced into
scoring position on the Engineers' second error of the inning.
Pat Barren '11 hit a sacrifice fly to score Allison and
advance Mathews to third. After a Robin Allemand '10
strikeout, catcher Chad Brown '10 singled to bring Mathews home.
After trading runs in the ensuing innings, Williams broke a 5-5
game wide open with a huge nine run sixth inning. The Ephs
had 8 hits in the inning, including a pair of Mondshein triples.
His first triple opened the scoring, driving home first
baseman Andrew Bishop '13 who reached on an error to lead off the
inning. His second game with the bases loaded, scoring three
runs. The Ephs also benefited from two RPI errors in the
innings.
Head Coach Bill Barrale was impressed with Mondshein's
performance: "Taylor was a really good high school player and
I think he's going to have a great career here. He's taken
advantage of his opportunities and worked his way into an everyday
role at third base."
The Ephs continued to produce in the late innings, scoring a run
in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Freshman Jimmy Ray
entered the game in the eighth and pitched two perfect innings,
recording one strikeout.
Ben Oliva '12 started the game for the Ephs, allowing five
earned runs on eight hits. Sal Palmiero picked up the loss
for RPI, giving up four runs on six hits in his one inning of work.
The Ephs had nine players record a hit and eight with more than
one. Allison and first baseman KC Murphy '13 had three hits
each while Maier, Allemand, Barren, and Darren Hartwell '13 had
two. Barrale was pleased with the way the team has continued
to improve: "Al Mathews and KC Murphy really stood out.
Murphy had some nice defensive plays to get some big outs and
get us out of long innings. Matt Berdoff did a great job and
picked up some key strikeouts. We minimized the errors and
added good defense. RPI is a very good team, they made the
NCAA tournament last year and it was a quality road win for us."
The Ephs picked up their 20th win of the season and kept their
win streak alive with the victory. Williams returns to action
when they travel to Springfield tomorrow.
