Ephs Earn Tough Road Win, 7-2 Over Springfield

Box Score

Designated Hitter Robin Allemand '10 and third baseman Taylor Mondshein each homered to lead the Ephs to their eleventh straight victory, 7-2 over Springfield College.  Allemand, who leads the team with eight triples, crushed his second home run of the season just after Mondshein put the Ephs on the board as part of a five run fifth inning that propelled the Ephs to the win.  Sophomore Harry Marino was dominant on the mound, earning the win by allowing only one earned run on six hits while striking out three and walking two in six innings of work.

In contrast to recent games, the Ephs struggled to hit in the early innings, falling behind 2-0 after the Pride put a pair of runs on the board in the fourth.  Williams more than equaled their hit total for the first four innings in the fifth, spoiling a solid start by Jon Wurster.  Freshman first baseman KC Murphy continued his hit streak, leading off the inning with a single through the left side.   After a flyout, Mondshein hit his first collegiate home run to tie the score.  After a groundout, Al Mathews '10, who is one hit away from increasing his season batting average to .500, singled to left center.  Mathews advanced to second on a passed ball and scored when right fielder Pat Barren '11 singled to right center.  Barren then advanced to second on a passed ball before coming home when Allemand homered to left center.

The Ephs added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning.  James Allison '11 led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double by Mathews.  Allison then scored on a sacrifice fly by Barren.  Mathews then scored on a single by Allemand.

Freshman Lucas Casso pitched well in relief, allowing two hits and a walk in three scoreless innings.

Wurster picked up the loss for Springfield, allowing five earned runs on ten hits and a walk while striking out three in five and a third innings of work.

Mathews led the Ephs with three hits, while Allemand, Mondshein, and Allison each had two.

Williams returns to action Saturday when they travel to Connecticut to take on Wesleyan before returning home to conclude the regular season against Westfield St.
