Ephs roughed up by Dartmouth in N.E. opener, 14-4

Box Score

HANOVER, N.H. -- Freshman Zack Bellenger had five hits, including his first career home run, as the Big Green cruised to a 14-4 victory over Williams on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ephs fell to 9-8 on the season and will host Keene State Wednesday at 4 p.m. in their home opener.

Williams had a chance to score in its half of the first when Stephen Maier led off with a single and, with two outs, Pat Barren singled. But Big Green starter Max Langford induced a fly out to right off the bat of Robin Allemand to end the threat.

Williams starter Harry Marino was not so lucky as he was roughed up for five runs on three hits and two walks in the bottom of the first. Dartmouth's second batter, Chris O'Dowd, homered off the Eph southpaw for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Ennis Coble hit a three-run home run for a 4-0 lead and the next batter, Bellenger, also went deep.

The Ephs came back with two in their half of the second. Cameron Susk singled through the left side with one outs and Andrew Bishop drew a walk. A passed ball put the runners on second and third and Jim Entwisle scored one run with a single up the middle, although he was thrown out at second on the play. Maier followed with an RBI-single up the middle, but James Allison flew out to right to end the rally.

Williams closed the score to 5-3 in its third when Barren launched a one-out, solo home run to left. But two throwing errors with two outs in the Dartmouth third allowed the Big Green to score two runs and make it a 7-3 score. The Ephs final run of the day came with two outs in the seventh when Allison ripped an RBI-single to score pinch-runner Darren Hartwell, who was running for Bishop, who had led off the frame with a double.

The Ephs had 10 hits on the day, led by Barren, who went 3 for 4 with a home run. Maier was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Marino took the loss, falling to 0-2. Eddie Nadel threw two innings, allowing just two unearned runs, and was followed by Matt Berdoff, Dan Grossman, Ben Oliva and Tom Hester. Hester tossed a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one.
