WALTHAM, MA -- The Williams College baseball team exploded for
eight runs in the first two innings and held on for a 15-5 win over
Bowdoin in game 1 of the NESCAC tournament. Sophomore Harry
Marino was dominant on the mound for the Ephs, allowing an earned
run on seven hits, walking two and striking out four in six innings
of work.
Williams started strong in the first. Center
fielder Stephen Maier '12 led off with a single to left field.
Second baseman James Allison '11 followed Maier with a single
up the middle. Left fielder Al Mathews '10 then walked to
load the bases with nobody out. A wild pitch scored Maier and
advanced Mathews and Allison to second and third. Right
fielder Pat Barren '11 walked to load the bases again.
Designated hitter Robin Allemand then hit a deep sacrifice
fly to score Allison. After a strikeout and a walk, first
baseman KC Murphy '13 singled up the middle to score Mathews and
give the Ephs a 3-0 lead.
After Marino shut down the Polar Bears in the second, the Ephs
added five more runs in the bottom of the second. Third
baseman Taylor Mondshein '13 led off with a walk. Maier
used his speed to turn a sacrifice into a bunt single. Allison hit
a sacrifice to advance Maier and Mondshein into scoring position.
Mathews sent Mondshein home on a fielder's choice.
Barren then reached on an error that scored Maier.
Allemand then singled to center field to bring Barren around
to score. After Allemand stole second, catcher Chad Brown '10
singled to score him. Shortstop Cameron Susk '12 kept the inning
alive with a double to right center that scored Brown.
Bowdoin put together a mini rally in the seventh, scoring four
runs off sophomore Dan Grossman. Ben Oliva '12 came on to
replace Grossman and escaped the inning, pitching two scoreless
innings to secure the victory.
Maier crushed his second home run of the season in the fourth to
increase the Eph lead to 10-0. Maier finished the day with a
pair of RBI, three hits, and three runs scored. Allemand and
Susk added three hits each while Allison, Brown, and Andrew Bishop
'13 had two.
Head Coach Bill Barrale was pleased with the team's
effort: "Harry Marino pitched a great game, which really
helped us. We played great defense and really hit the ball
well. Our guys were nice and loose and came out focused.
We had a good approach the game and we have a potent lineup 1
through 9. Steve [Maier] had a great day for us and Taylor
Mondshein had a clutch double with two strikes. It was a good
team effort. Whenever they got on the board we came back with
runs of our own."
The Ephs advance to the winner's bracket where they face host
Tufts College. Senior Paul Burgdorf '10 will start for the
Ephs who can advance to the championship game with a victory.
