PHOENIX, AZ. -- It's getting hard to count out the Williams College baseball team.
Another win in its last at-bat proved that Wednesday as the Ephs scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to shock Oberlin, 4-3, then wrapped up a sweep with a 10-3 win in the nightcap.
Williams improved to 11-2 overall heading into a Thursday game against Gustavus Adolphus.
In Wednesday's first game, the Ephs trailed Oberlin 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and no one on, Darren Hartwell singled. Stephen Maier followed with an RBI-double that made it 3-2. Senior James Allison then lined an RBI-double that tied the game. Cameron Susk was given an intentional walk, but senior Pat Barren foiled that strategy by smacking a line-drive single to right that scored Allison with the winning run.
Allison finished 2 for 3 with a walk.
Reliever Dan Grossman earned the win, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings and allowing two hits and no runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out one. Wilson Barr started for the Williams and went the first 5 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and one walk while striking out no one.
In the nightcap, the Ephs jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to a 10-3 victory. In the second inning, the Ephs scored twice to take the lead. Three straight singles from Marco Hernandez, Taylor Mondshein and Andrew Bishop (RBI) led to a run. After a double play, Hartwell singled in a second run.
Williams added three runs in the third when Maier singled, Allison singled and Susk reached on an error to load the bases. Barren's RBI-groundout scored a run, and Hernandez smacked a two-run double for a 5-0 lead.
Williams finished with 16 hits in the win. Hernandez was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI. Barren had two RBI as well. Allison, Susk and Hartwell were each 2 for 4 in the victory.
First year Marty Clarke got the start and earned his first collegiate victory, going four innings and allowing two hits and three walks while striking out one. He allowed one earned run. Three relievers, Lucas Casso, Tommy Stephens and Jimmy Ray, closed out the win for the Ephs, with Stephens and Ray tossing scoreless frames.
