Williams swipes two from Hamilton

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

CLINTON, NY—Williams edged Hamilton in both halves of a doubleheader today, 3-2 and 7-6. Tommy Stephens '14 was the hero of the day, homering in the 10th inning to break a 6-6 tie in the second game, while Harry Marino provided enough of a spark from the mound to take the first game.

The first campaign, though, was a seven-inning affair that saw a complete-game battle between two hurlers. Harry Marino was more than effective for the Ephs, throwing all seven innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits to earn his third win of the season.

For Marino, the win came as a byproduct of getting key outs with men on base. With one out in the first inning, Wesley Mayberry singled to put two on for Hamilton. Marino, though, worked out of the jam with a pop-up and a groundout, setting the tone for the day.

The Continental bats stayed relatively silent for the rest of the day before coming alive in the fifth inning. With one out, senior Pat Gennaco hit a double before advancing to third on a wild pitch. After Marino induced a groundout, Gennaco scored on another wild pitch.

Hamilton's only other first-game offense came in the bottom of the last inning. With one out, Justin Atwood hammered a solo home run to draw his team within one run. Marino, though, struck out Gennaco and then yielded a line drive to center field to close out the game for Ephs.

Williams, meanwhile, wasted no offense in either game. The Ephs managed seven hits, the same number as their opponents, and scored in just one inning. After leaving the bases loaded in the second and a man in scoring position in the third, the Ephs came alive for the top of the fourth.

Marco Hernandez started things with an infield single. Stephens lined out to center, but a Taylor Mondshein walk and a K.C. Murphy single loaded the bases. Matt Kastner drove one run in with a single to left, scoring Hernandez. Leadoff hitter Steve Maier followed that with a sacrifice fly to score another run, and James Allison's single provided the final Eph run of the inning and the game.

The second game saw more of an offensive explosion, with a combined 27 hits and 13 runs between the two squads. Eddie Nadel started for the Ephs, and worked through 4 2/3 innings while yielding three runs. Hamilton's offense worked constantly, scoring one run each in the second, third, and fourth innings.

Matt Berdoff came on in relief of Nadel in the fifth, though, striking out a batter with two outs to work out of a jam. He induced a double play in the sixth inning to stymie the Continentals as well before running into some trouble in the seventh.

After Mayberry singled and Lukas Bridenbeck doubled, Michael Matt pounded a three-run homer over left field, tying the game at six runs apiece. Nine innings would not be enough to decide the second of the teams' contests.

Stephens' blast, as it ended up, was even more notable. Junior John Wulf came on for Hamilton and struck out the side in the tenth inning, fanning the first two batters and the fourth as well. In between, though, Stephens hit a blast to left-center that provided enough offense for the Ephs to escape victorious in the game and on the day.

Matt Kastner finished with three hits for Williams, and Patrick Blizzard tallied three RBI and a home run. Pat Barren also had two hits in the winning effort, which improved Williams to 21-10 on the year (4-7 NESCAC).

The Ephs take on Hamilton again tomorrow.
