Tale of two games in Williams doubleheader; Ephs split with Wesleyan

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

MIDDLETOWN, CT--They faced the same opponent in both games, but the results could not have been any more different for the Ephs, who split their doubleheader with Wesleyan Saturday. Williams took the afternoon's first contest in a domineering 8-1 victory, but failed to score en route to an 8-0 defeat in the late game.

Southpaw Harry Marino (W, 2-1) took control in the early game, lasting the full seven innings while yielding just two hits and one unearned run. Although he walked three and hit another batter, Marino smoothly navigated his way through the Cardinal lineup, allowing just three runners to reach second base all afternoon. The Eph hurler struck out five, and received ample help from a potent lineup.

At the plate, Williams pounded out 12 hits and rode two big innings to the victory. After stranding two runners in the first inning, the latter part of the Eph order rallied for three runs in the top of the second. With one out, K.C. Murphy and Darren Hartwell hit back-to-back doubles to get a run across. Matt Kastner followed with an RBI single to right field, and advanced to third on a steal and an error. Steve Maier brought him in with a sacrifice fly to foul territory in left field.

Murphy again started the rally in the visitor's half of the fourth inning with another one-out double. Hartwell reached on an infield single to put runners on first and third, and a wild pitch brought Murphy home. Centerfielder Maier brought Kastner, who had walked, around to score with a double to right center. Catcher James Allison capped off the inning with an RBI single.

"The bottom of the lineup really came through for us," Coach Barrale said of his 7-9 hitters, who went a combined 6-10 with six runs and three RBIs. "They were really the story of the game, along with Harry." Wesleyan's only run came in the sixth as a result of an error and two groundouts. Williams tacked on an eighth run in the seventh inning with the game well in hand.

The late game went a different direction entirely. Although Williams mustered ten hits, they failed to score a run in the nine-inning contest. Coach Barrale attributed the shutout to a combination of factors. "We couldn't get a timely hit," he said. "We got a lot of two-out hits and just couldn't get guys around. Their pitcher was great, though. He didn't walk a guy and got out of trouble."

Eddie Nadel got the nod to start the afternoon's second game, but lasted through just four innings with mixed success. After a flawless two innings, Nadel ran into trouble in the third inning, although he limited the damage to one run. In the fourth, however, he was not as lucky. Four hits and a hit batter led to four runs, in a rally highlighted by Kyle Weiss' two-run double.

Matt Berdoff came in to relieve Nadel, and gave up three runs—two earned—in his first inning of work before settling down. "They found the gaps," Coach Barrale said. "It's a cruel game. It seemed like their hits just kept dropping between two, three guys."

Matt Kastner rounded out a strong day with two hits in the second game. Adam Marske and Cameron Susk each added doubles as part of multi-hit games. Taylor Mondshein and James Allison were also 2-4.

Cardinal pitcher Jimmy Hill took the win, throwing a complete game shutout despite allowing ten hits. With the victory, Hill improved to 4-0 on the season.

Wesleyan and Williams wrap up the weekend tomorrow on Williams' field at 1:00.
