Ephs forced to settle with split with Oberlin

PHOENIX, AZ.-- The Williams Collge baseball team settled for a split Sunday, taking the opening game 5-3 behind Harry Marino's complete-game effort, but falling in the nightcap, 4-3.

The Ephs are now 3-5. They have two more games against Oberlin on Monday.

Williams' victory in the first game was as dramatic as it gets. The Ephs were no-hit for the first 5 2/3 innings of a scheduled 7-inning affair and trailed 3-1. Cameron Susk broke open the no-hitter with a two-out single. Tom Stephens reached on an error. Marco Hernandez singled home Susk to make it 3-2. Taylor Mondshein then singled to tie the game. Phil McGovern walked to load the bases and Ben Oliva followed with a free pass to force Hernandez home with the go-ahead run. Luke Pierce capped the uprising with an RBI-single.

That rally made a winner of  senior Harry Marino, who shut down Oberlin in the seventh. Marino went all seven frames, allowing six hits and three runs, all earned. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.

In the nightcap, Williams led 3-0 early, but ultimately fell 4-3 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.

Williams took a 1-0 lead in the first when Matt Kastner singled, stole second and scored on a Susk single. The Ephs added a run in the second when Luke Pierce singled and stole second. After an out, Chance Reuger singled Pierce home. A double steal accounted for another Williams run in the fourth.

Oberlin rallied with two runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Steve Marino started for the Ephs and went the first six innings and allowed seven hits and three runs, all earned, while walking three and striking out one. Charlie Baxter (0-2) took the loss, allowing two hits, a walk and a hit batsman in 2/3 innings.

K.C. Murphy and Kirby Neuner were each 2 for 3 with a run scored.
