PHOENIX, AZ.-- The Williams College baseball team rallied from a five-run deficit in the nightcap of its second straight doubleheader with Oberlin College Monday, salvaging a split via a 12-10 come-from-behind victory.
The Ephs are now 4-6 heading into a single game at Arizona Christian Wednesday.
After falling 7-3 in Monday's first game, the Ephs found themselves trailing 6-1 after 2 1/2 innings of the nightcap. A six-run third inning put them back on top,7-6, but Oberlin rallied for three runs in the fifth to retake the lead, 9-8.
Williams countered with a four-run fifth and went on to the 12-10 win. The Ephs had just one infield hit in the decisive fifth, but turned that, two hit batsmen and three Oberlin errors into four runs. Matt Kastner drove home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
In the six-run third, first-year David Webster lined a two-run double prior to RBI-singles from Taylor Mondshein and Stephen Maier, who was playing for the first time this season following an injury during hockey season.
First-year Dylan Griswold got the start for the Ephs and went four-plus innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs, all earned, while walking four and striking out two. Lucas Casso got the win, tossing one frame and giving up two hits and a walk. He was charged with two runs, only one of which was earned.
Dan Grossman and Jimmy Ray tossed one inning each of relief,with Ray holding on to get the save.
Maier was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a double and RBI. Cameron Susk was 1 for 1 with three walks.
In the opener, Oberlin built a 6-0 after two innings. Williams rallied for three in the third to cut the deficit in half. Darren Hartwell had a RBI-fielder'schoice and Susk roped a two-run double. First-year Jacob Slater got the start, going five innings and giving up eight hits and seven runs, six earned, while walking three and striking out three.
Phil McGovern was 2 for 3 in the loss.
