Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Williams defeated Union 9-6 in non-conference action today at the Ephs' Bobby Coombs Field. The Ephs (11-17) led 5-0 after three and 7-2 after four and held off a late rally by the Dutchmen (19-13) to win.
The Ephs got on the board early with three in the first and two in the third off Union starter Eric Beer. With two men on, Jack Roberts crushed a belt-high fastball over the right-field fence for his third homer of the year. In the third, an Adam Dulsky double and Luke Pierce single each drove in runs to extend the lead to 5-0.
Union got on the board in the fourth when CJ Worley and Anders Goetz collected RBI, but the Ephs answered with two of their own to leave the inning with a 7-2 lead. With Kirby Neuner on second, back-to-back doubles from Roberts and Dulsky added a pair of runs.
Dunn, meanwhile, pitched a strong game. The freshman righty didn't allow a ball to reach the outfield until the fourth, and even as he started to labor towards the end of his six-inning outing, he kept Union off the board.
He started the seventh but left the game after giving up a pair of baserunners. Eddie Kelly came on and was unable to stem the Dutchman attack, but Thomas Murphy came on to get out of the jam and preserve a 7-5 lead. After the Ephs added two insurance runs, Union threatened again in the 9th, but Eph closer Jacob Slater stranded the bases loaded to end the game.
Dunn (3-1) got the win, working 6+ innings and striking out six. He gave up four runs on seven hits. Union's Beer (2-1) took the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits in three innings.
Both teams collected 14 hits, but the Ephs managed to strand 14 Dutchmen on base. The Ephs were led by Roberts, who went 2-3 with a home run and four RBI, and Dulsky, who went 4-5 with three extra-base hits. Union's Worley paced his offense with a 3-4, two-RBI day.
Head coach Bill Barrale said of his team after the game, "We hit the ball ... and Connor Dunn did a great job."
Williams plays its third home game in as many days tomorrow, when it hosts MCLA at 4:00. Union returns to the field this weekend for a key Liberty League series with Rochester.
