Box Score Williamstown, MA - The Williams College Baseball team faced off against Union College at Bobby Coombs Field on Wednesday. The Ephs secured a comfortable 16-9 win over the Dutchmen.
Sophomore pitcher Jacob Martin started the game for the Ephs. Williams started slowly with an error and two walks leading to a bases loaded o opportunity for Union. Ryan Cowles scored the first run for the Dutchmen after Thomas Parisi walked, and Kobe Mentzer scored the second run after Andrew Keaveney's sacrifice fly out.
However, Williams rallied in the bottom of the first inning, scoring six runs. The Ephs were able to load the bases, and a wild pitch led to an unearned run scored by Sasha Palma. Luka Lopetrone's single drove in Matthew Brown and Dave Mosrie. Williams ended the first inning with a 6-2 lead.
After the combined 8-run first inning, only one run followed in the second inning as Williams' Whitehouse scored after James O'Connor's single. However, Mike Giove's booming hit in the bottom of the third inning was a game-changer. With the bases loaded, Giove hit a triple, giving the Ephs a 10-3 lead. The scoring continued for the Ephs as Jakob Cohn's single sent Giove home. First-year, Sash Palma hit a big double, adding two more runs for the Ephs. Palma himself scored the 14th run to close out the third inning.
Although Union tried to mount a comeback, adding six runs in the fourth inning, the Ephs added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth from Whitehouse and O'Connor, ultimately securing a 16-9 win.
Jacob Martin took the win for Williams, pitching for two innings and allowing only one earned run. Williams used six different pitchers in the game. On the other hand, Mlavsky took the loss for Union, pitching for two innings and allowing two earned runs.
The Ephs will next face Middlebury College at home on Friday at 4:00 PM. On Saturday Williams will play a doubleheader vs. Middlebury also at home with the first game starting at noon.
