Box Score Williamstown, MA - Middlebury College defeated the Williams College Baseball Team 9-7 in a hard-fought game on Friday. Eric Gage took the start for the Ephs and pitched through four innings, allowing three earned runs. Middlebury's Justin Lessing got the start but was pulled after only pitching for two outs.
Middlebury's captain, Andrew Gough, got the Panthers on the scoreboard with a home run to left field in the first inning, which was their only score of the inning. Williams began the game with a leadoff walk from Mike Giove. Jakob Cohn followed with an RBI double, resulting in a Giove score and tying the ballgame. Cohn would eventually score an unearned run from a Daniel Lynch single.
In the third inning, Middlebury tied the game 2-2 with a Nathan Samii single to right field that sent Gough home for his second run of the game. Middlebury continued their attack in the fourth inning, adding two more runs from Sammy Smith and Kyle McCauslan. Williams added a run in the bottom of the fourth following a Cohn single to left field, sending Mosrie in for the score. Middlebury led 4-3 heading into the fifth.
First-year pitcher Teddy 'Ballgame' Massingham took the mound for the Ephs in the fifth inning and didn't allow a single hit. He showed great potential for the future.
Middlebury dominated the sixth inning, rallying in four additional runs and taking a commanding 8-3 lead. However, the Ephs didn't give up and fought back. Mosrie added another run for Williams, making the game 8-4.
In the late innings, Luka Lopetrone, a first-year player who has impressed for the Ephs, hit a much-needed double. A balk advanced him to third, and Giove followed with a single, bringing Lopetrone home. Giove scored the sixth run for the Ephs after Driscoll was grounded out. The game was 8-6 heading into the ninth inning.
Lucas Flemming scored the final run for the Panthers off a balk. Another big hit from Lopetrone resulted in a Williams score from Lynch, but unfortunately, the Ephs couldn't make the comeback. They will look to take the double-header from the visiting Panthers tomorrow. First game tomorrow is slated to start at noon and the second game is expected to start at 3 PM.
