Ephs bang out 21 hits in 12-4 win over Thomas

CHANDLER, AZ. — For the second day in a row the Williams College baseball team banged out 21 hits en route to a 12-4 win over Thomas College at Snedigar Park Tuesday.  The win was the eighth straight for the Ephs, who improved to 8-5.

Williams wraps up its spring trip to Arizona Wednesday with a 3 p.m. (MST) game against Thomas.

Senior Martin Green put together a four-hit day, going 4 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Four other Ephs had three-hit days, while three first-year pitchers combined for eight innings of nine-hit, four-run ball in the victory.

The Ephs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when one of those first-years, Ben Oliva, led off the frame with a triple. He scored on Green's first hit of the day, an RBI-single.

Williams broke the game open with a five-run second. Senior Barrett Allison drew a one-out walk and stole second. After a second out, Jamaal Johnson drew walk. Oliva followed with an RBI-double. Green plated Johnson with a single and Al Mathews took a walk. Taylor Mikell followed with a two-run single and Chad Brown capped the frame with an RBI-double that scored Mathews for a 6-0 lead.

Oliva finished the day 3 for 6 with a double, triple and two RBI. Brown was 3 for 5 with a double and three RBI. Mikell was 3 for 4 with two RBI. Jim Entwisle finished 3 for 4. Mathews was 2 for 5 and Barrett Allison was 1 for 2 with two walks and a stolen base.

First-year Eddie Nadel got the start for the Ephs and went the first four frames, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out four. The only run he gave up was unearned. Classmate Evan Oleson came on to toss an inning and struck out the side while allowing two hits and two walks. He was charged with two runs. 

First-year Dan Grossman earned the win, throwing three innings and allowing only two hits and one run while striking out five. He did not walk a batter. Junior Tom Coleman finished up by striking out the side in the ninth.
