CHANDLER, AZ. -- The Williams College baseball team ended its
trip out West in splendid fashion Wednesday, downing Thomas 22-8
for its ninth consecutive victory. The Ephs return home 9-5 after
starting the season 0-5.
Williams plays its New England opener Sunday at Babson beginning
at 1 p.m.
Junior Al Mathews went 5 for 5 to lead a 25-hit attack against
Thomas. The Ephs outscored Thomas 53-14 over three games and come
home averaging just under 10 runs a game after their first 14
contests of the season.
Mathews' big day included a double and six RBI, he also walked.
Senior Zach Stone went 5 for 7 with five singles on the day,
driving in three runs. First-year Stephen Maier was 4 for 5 from
the lead-off spot with two doubles and three runs scored. Jim
Entwisle went 4 for 6 with three RBI and four runs scored.
Junior Robin Allemand was 2 for 5 with a triple and four RBI,
and Chad Brown was 2 for 5 with two RBI.
The game was tied 4-4 after four innings, but the Ephs scored
twice in the fifth to take the lead for good at 6-4. Mathews led
off with a single and stole second. One out later, Brown reached on
an error and stole second. Cameron Susk singled in Mathews for the
go-ahead run, and Stone laced an RBI-single to score Brown.
Williams added three in the sixth to take a 9-5 lead. Entwisle
led off with a single. After an out, Allemand singled and Mathews
followed with an RBI-single, taking second on the throw home as
Allemand went to third. Brown followed with a two-run single.
Five Ephs took the mound in the win, with the most effective
being junior Paul Burgdorf, who hurled two hitless frames while
walking two and striking out two. The win went to first-year Harry
Marino, who hurled three innings and allowed three runs, all
earned, while walking three and striking out two.
