TEMPE, AZ. — First year Lucas Casso
tossed a 5-hit shutout in the second game of a twinbill with Thomas
College Thursday, giving Williams its second straight split.
Williams improved to 3-4 with the Game Two 1-0 win. The Ephs
open conference play tomorrow against Middlebury at 1:30 PM, MST.
Casso struck out one while tossing his gem, walking three and
giving up five hits over seven innings. Thomas had runners of first
and third with one out in the top of the seventh, but the Ephs were
able to turn a double play to end the game.
Williams scored the game's only run in the bottom of the third
when first year Taylor Mondshein cracked a triple and scored when
junior James Allison singled him home. Allison, who went 6 for 7 on
the day, led the Ephs' 7-hit attack by going 2 for 3 with an RBI.
First year Jimmy Ray was 2 for 2 at the plate.
In the opener, six Williams errors led to a 10-6 Thomas win.
Thomas put four runs on the board in the bottom of the first to
take a 4-0 lead, but Williams fought back with four of its own in
the top of the second. Pat Barren led off with a single, Cameron
Susk followed with a single and Andrew Bishop roped a third
consecutive single that scored Barren. Jim Entwisle sacrificed the
runner to second and third, critical because Stephen Maier then
plated Susk with a sacrifice fly. Allison then tied the game when
he crushed a two-run home run.
Alas, Thomas scored a run in its half of the second to regain
the lead at 5-4, then scored twice more in the third and single
runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to walk away winners. The Ephs
had 10 hits in the loss, led by Allison, who was 4 for 4 with two
singles, a double, a home run and two RBI. Al Mathews was 2 for 4.
Wilson Barr took the loss for Williams, lasting 4 1/3 innings
while giving up nine hits and three walks. He struck out two. Of
the nine runs charged to him, only three were earned.
