Ephs take down Southern Vermont 17-1

Box Score

BENNINGTON, VT -- The Williams College baseball team dominated in all areas en route to a 17-1 win over Southern Vermont Wednesday.  The Ephs scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back, scoring three more in the second and cruising to the win.  Ben Oliva '12 won his first game of the year, pitching six innings of two-hit baseball, surrendering one earned run, and recording nine strikeouts.

The Ephs put their first six runners on base to break the game wide open in the first.  Third baseman Taylor Mondshein '13 led off with a triple.  James Allison '11 then advanced to first when he was hit by a pitch.  Al Mathews '10 picked up his 25th RBI with a single to score Mondshein and put the Ephs on the board.  Robin Allemand '10 then singled to load the bases for the hot-hitting Chad Brown '11 who crushed a 3-run double to increase the Ephs' lead to 4.  After a Cameron Susk walk, the Mountaineers were able to pick up a pair of outs, but the Ephs continued to score with two outs.  Darren Hartwell '13 picked up his first collegiate RBI with a double, before Mondshein connected on a 2-run double.

Williams used a walk, an error, and a hit batter to load the bases with two outs in the second and Pat Blizzard '13, who has seen most of his action this season as a pitcher, cleared the bases with a triple to give the Ephs a 10-0 lead.

Oliva was dominant, pitching perfect innings in every inning except the fourth.  Danny Grossman '12, Jimmy Ray '13, and Cameron Susk '12 each pitched an inning, allowing only one hit and no runs between the three of them.

Mondshein led the offense for the Ephs with four hits, 2 RBI, and a run scored.  Blizzard and first baseman KC Murphy '13 also had three hits, and Blizzard added 5 RBI.  Mathews, Allemand, and Brown each had a pair of hits in the contest.

Head Coach Bill Barrale was thrilled with the stellar performance of Oliva: "The biggest thing for us was Ben Oliva.  He did a great job setting the tone, allowing only two hits and striking out nine.  Again its pitching and defense and today we got the job done."  Barrale also enjoyed the opportunity to show off the team's depth: "The midweek games are great because we get to put guys in game situations and this week they've proved they can really play well."  Blizzard was a perfect example, playing limited time in the field this season but crushing three triples in the game:  "Pat was a good hitter in high school and he doesn't have a chance to play too much because our lineup is so deep, but you saw today that he can really get the job done."

The Ephs improved to 17-9-1 on the season, while Southern Vermont fell to 10-14.  The Ephs return home for a crucial series with little three rival Wesleyan.  Both teams enter with 7-2 league records, meaning that the winner of the three-game set will win the division.  The series begins Saturday with a doubleheader at Bobby Coombs Field starting at 1 PM.
