WILLIAMSTOWN—The Williams baseball team rolled over Southern Vermont College 15-1 Wednesday afternoon at Bobby Coombs Field. Marty Clarke was nearly untouchable on the mound, and ten different Ephs had hits at the plate for the Ephs, who improve to 18-7 with the win.
"To be honest it was great just to get the game in," Coach Bill Barrale said afterwards. "With the bad forecast and everything, it was nice not to have to sit around. A lot of credit to the grounds crew for getting us out there."
Once play began, though, it was a one-sided contest. After trading goose eggs in the first inning, Williams got it going in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Matt Kastner reached on an error, scoring Taylor Mondshein from third. The next batter, Steve Maier, homered to left, bringing in Kastner.
Over the next four innings the Ephs poured it on, scoring one run in the third, four in the fourth, three in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Mondshein and Maier led the offensive attack with three hits each. Williams also took advantage of five walks and six errors to pull away.
Once the game was well in hand, it was all Marty Clarke. The first-year lefthander threw six innings of one-hit ball in his first home start, yielding no runs and striking out four. "It was nice to see Marty do that," Barrale added about the rookie. "We obviously hit the ball a ton, so for him to compete like he did was great."
Clarke did struggle at times with his accuracy, walking five Mountaineers. But he stranded each one, throwing a gem before Matt Berdoff took over for the final inning.
James Allison and Marco Hernandez each added two hits and two RBI for the Ephs, who take the field again tomorrow ain a contest at SUNYIT. The week's games lead in to huge conference contests with Amherst this weekend.
